I remember not long after I join this company, one of my colleague which was with the IT Department told me that the IT Dept will be closed down and he had been given a retrenchment.
At that time, never have I heard of such thing. To me retrenchment only happens to very senior people or when the company decides to shut down. The reason they shut down the IT at that time was they had outsourced the IT to 3rd party outsourcing company. It was a global initiatives and that from that day onwards, our company no longer have any IT people sitting around. All repair, formatting, hardware/software problem we do it via Net meeting and also sending the laptop to the service center.
Initially, it worked well, but as more and more complicated issued starts to appear, the user i.e. our own employees start to have comments on the service we got. It started with the comment that the outsourcing company using a non-English speaking engineer, typically Thai person to attend to our problem. We have such great difficulties understanding their instructions. Then, the problem escalated until once I heard a very high level manager had a problem with his notebook, when he called the help desk, he was treated badly / mistreated and not clear instructions is given.
That had triggered a snowball effect and the company started to look into the feasibility of outsourcing this to others. Eventually, as the outsourcing contract comes to an end, the company did not extend the service and today, we have an IT person sitting full time in the office.
When we heard that the IT will hire, the first name that all spoke out was the previous IT guy that was retrenched. However, things does not always goes as what we wanted. They company hired a guy from the outsourcing company instead.
I am not saying this person is not good. He had tonnes of certificates with regards to Windows OS System but he is lagging in our main mail software (it is not convenient for me to say the name of the software here). I notice whenever I have any problem with the mail software, he will take the PC and call his friend(s) over the net meeting / skype / chat in his old company to help him troubleshoot.
This is the incident that happen at the week I came back from Perth. I notice there is something wrong with my mail software. Then, I took the notebook to him, he admitted that he had requested help from his friend which is "more expert" in this software to resolve my problem.
The nightmare did not end there. From the day I took the notebook back after the repair, I begin to experience the software 'hanging' and the whole notebook not responding. Again, I told him my problem, and again, he tried a few attempts to resolve the problem but not successful.
Until yesterday, he promise to re-install the software for me and from about 10am in the morning, until now (its about 10am already) he had failed to resolve my problem, giving me reason that the software from the server is not installing properly and that the whole Pacific is facing this problem for new installation.
Yesterday evening at about 6.30pm, he called me in my house and told me to use the web-based e-mail address, however, only this morning he realised that to access to the web-based mail server I need to reset the password in the mail server which he had denied me access with his setup / repair yesterday.
I was so mad this morning when I realise this. Get real man, you are suppose to the the IT expert in our company, such simple issue you overlook and now, again, I have no way of accessing my e-mails and in today's working life, without e-mail is like 'lost' and not much of work can be done.
Now I can only sit around in the office, surf the net while waiting for him to restore my mail software back. Until then, I can't do any 'fruitful' work at all.
Hopefully everything can be restored by later today. Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Happiest Moment
Today (19th Jan 2010) at approx 9.45am is one of the happiest moment in my life. While I am working in my office, I got a SMS from my lovely gf which was really a surprise.
I was really surprise to see that SMS. I am not in the position to write the SMS content, but one thing I can say is that I have been waiting for that similar kind of SMS for a few years already.
Thank you Dear, you made me a very happy person and thanks for your kind faith and trust all these years and many many more enjoyable years to come.

Great Saturday
Last Saturday was really wonderful. My gf and me both went for a comedy ballet performance at KLPAC entitled "Men In Tutus". It was a show recommended by my gf and one thing I can say, it was really worth watching and I really enjoyed myself.
The Saturday (16th Jan 2010) was like normal Saturday, I went a bit late to see my gf as there was an appointment with a lawyer about some house MOT issues which I need to clarify. So, I only arrived to see my gf at about 3pm.
We went to a place for tea in which I had a glass of "Healthy Detox" drinks in which, celery, apple, ginger and cucumber are blended into juice. It was a bit heavy on the ginger side as the drink tasted a little strong on the ginger side. My gf had herself a glass of banana and yogurt blended drink.
After the drinks and some chit chats, we drove our self to Jln Ipoh to try find the KLPAC. After locating, it, we decided to have our dinner before going for the performance. Previously, I have heard from a some of my friends that Jln Ipoh (or Ipoh Road in English) is good for Chinese "Dim Sum". However, I have never been there myself.
As we drove around, we decided to stop for some stir fried stuffs (vegetables + rice), but out of coincident, we walked to a shop that sells "Dim Sum" instead. Initially, I didn't know if my gf would like to have that for dinner or not. To my surprise, she also loves it but did not mentioned it to me before, or perhaps she did and I could not remember as we rarely have "dim sum".
We had our share of chicken with glutinous rice (lor mai kai in Chinese), some meat balls, some "pau". The price was really reasonable as well. For all we stuffed ourselves, the bill came to less than RM30. I think we had about 9 types of different meat stuffed configurations e.g. meat stuffed in egg plant bitter gourd, stuffed meat with eggs etc etc and one big "pau", one B-B-Q pork "pau" and not forgetting 2 "lor mai kai". I would say a good value for money.
Normally, "dim sums" are taken for breakfast or brunch. It is very rare to see people having it for dinner. However, this shop or perhaps street had a couple of shops selling it for dinner and also for supper perhaps. I think the concept is that they start selling at the evening, all the way until the morning ready for the early breakfast serving and only close in the afternoon and re-open in the evening again. Don't know. Didn't ask.
Anyhow, after the nice filling dinner, we drove to the venue and collected our pre-booked tickets from the counter. The show started a bit late. It was scheduled at 8.30pm but only started 10 minutes or so later. Malaysian timing. What to do??
The show as full of laughter all the way from the very beginning until the end. Even for someone like me who don't really have much of imaginative mind and never able to grasp much of abstract arts / performance, seems to find the show easily understood. I really had a great laugh and really enjoyed myself a lot. I hope my gf had enjoyed herself too!!
Like all live performance, there is an interval of 20 minutes in between the one and a half hours performance. The part I like the most is the "Dying Swan" and also the "Swan Lake" performance. These performer are all tall (approx 6' 3"), well build (muscular) professional male ballet dances wearing the ladies ballet costume.
You can see that they are really good dancers and they have added a touch of comedy into their performance making it very fresh and hilarious. Only after watching, I understood how come this show was so highly commented and recommended from various parties.
The one thing a bit disappointing is that the show ended too soon. The one and a half hours performance seems a bit short for me. Perhaps as the saying in Chinese (Cantonese) "Fai Lock Pat Chee See San Kor".. which literally translate to "when you are having fun, you don't realise time passing".
As soon as the show started, that I felt like only few minutes ago, it ended and when I look at the watch only to realise it was actually 2230 hrs already. We left the hall a very entertained people.
I would like to thank my gf for such a good choice of show. Good thing that I did not miss it. Thank You Dear!!

President Visit
Today is one of the historic day in my company. After we have been operating for almost 20 years in Malaysia, this is the first time the President actually step foot to our office.
All the while, the President only land in our Asia Pacific HQ which is in S'pore. Never once even bothered to pay a visit to the Malaysia office.
However, today the new President of Asia actually make a visit to our office in Malaysia. Hence, our company had arranged for a lunch for everybody to get to meet and greet the President.
Upon getting the news that the President will visit to our office, the Office Manager is busy setting things up so that everything will be in order. She started with getting a new company signboard which was previously stolen... yes you read correctly, stolen under the nose of the security guard. The security guard company did compensate us but with a cheap one which looks really ugly.
So last week, finally she ordered a new one to be installed. Then, she even arrange cleaning company to wash the carpets. The 2nd and 3rd storey of the company is fully carpeted. Hence, over the years, it is just being vacuum daily by the cleaner lady, but last week, the office manager did actually arrange a cleaning company to shampoo the carpet.
Also, over the week, the electrical supplier was busy working around the office to change and replace all the bulbs and ensure all electrical plugs, cables etc are in good working order.
Not only limited to the office manager, the head of department from the Logistics Department, Mrs. J was also under pressure. News had spread to her that the President's background is in manufacturing / warehousing / logistics, she get so tense that she have personally walk and inspect the warehouse setup multiple times and ensure everything inclusive of the PPE and First Aid Boxes are fully furnished.
Finally, the day have arrived, today just before lunch time, the President arrived to our office and he was given a office and warehouse tour before beginning his meeting with the respective head of departments.
According to the secretary he will be here until Friday evening, only today he will be in the office, tomorrow and day after, he will be going around to meet the major customers and foster business relationship. Hopefully, with his visit here, the company will move towards a better future as now at least we know that our office here is still under his eyes.
Lets hope for the better 2010 and beyond !!

Food pricing
I am not sure if anyone have this experience of eating in a Malay food stall / shop.
Me and my colleague (Mr. Onion) use to go for Malay food for lunch quite frequently as we both enjoy curries and spicy food.
As all Malay food shop, they have this large variety of dishes for you to choose and pick the amount that you think you can finish. After selecting your dishes, then the "waiter cum cost estimator" will come along to ask you for the drink that you want and then give you a bill for the food and drinks.
One thing I notice is that these food shop, they do not have a fixed pricing for the food they serve. Back in 1995, when I first started working for the very first time, I went to this stall near Central Market for lunch, I did not know the pricing as there were no price tags, I took some squids, some curry chicken and a bit of vegetable, the cashier charges me a hefty RM15!!! I was shocked!! Come on, back in 1995, I was only a temporary clerk working in a bank, how much am I earning? I can eat lunch for a week for RM15 at that time.
That was two lessons I learn and never forget. From then on, I told myself 2 things:
One - Never take seafood (squids, prawns or clams) and
Two - Do not go back to Central Market Food court for lunch... haha..
Now, whenever we go for that cuisine, I only take a piece of chicken, some vegetable and sometimes some scramble eggs or salted eggs. I even notice that when you take fish, it will easily cost you more than RM5 just for the fish. So I seldom take any fish.
This lesson was not learn until today by Mr. Onion. He loves squids. Whenever he sees squids, he will not miss it. Just today as we went to the shop, the moment he saw the squids, he quickly grab a spoonful of it. There were approximately 4 landed on his plate. He then proceed to take 2 pieces of chicken drumstick with thigh and a bit of chips.
When the waiter cum cost estimator came, he pass him a food bill of RM15 and Mr. Onion nearly fell off his chair. Then after finishing the food, as we went to the counter to ask the cashier how much was the squids, it is priced ridiculously at RM4 each. Then, the chicken is also at RM4 per piece. If you add up the total, Mr Onion took 4 squids = RM16, 2 pieces of chicken = RM8 and rice + some chips say RM2, the total would be RM26 for the rice already. But, he was lucky that the cost estimator only charges him RM15 in total.
Just imagine, small tiny squids is priced at RM4 per piece. The government is implementing price control for most of the raw food ingredients, but, did they even look into those cooked food pricing? Is there a price control on these items I wonder?
One more incident that shocked the customer also witness by me was there was once in a food shop, a customer with a family of 5 came over for dinner. The father ordered a curry fish head and some other food stuffs e.g. fried chicken, some vegetables etc. When the waiter came over to give him the bill, I think he nearly fainted when just the curry fish head itself cost him RM120!!! Mind you this is not an air conditioned, high end hotel restaurant. It is just a shop selling food / commonly known as 'mamak' shop with fan.
How did I know that? He was arguing with the waiter and spoke out aloud the price for the curry fish head. As if he wanted every customer sitting nearly to know that the price of the curry fish here there is ridiculous. I think if the curry fish head bones is soft enough, he will swallow it and also lick every single drop of the curry from the bowl.
Just imagine, the shop owner might just buy the fish head from the fish monger at RM20 or perhaps RM30. With some curry paste and coconut milk, a few ladies finger and some egg plant, he can sell it nearly 4 times the cost of the fish head.
I think that is the reason some "Nasi Lemak" seller here can afford to for for Europe tour yearly 15 to 20 days with the family of 10 without miss and some "roti canai" seller can drive a Benz S500. Their profit margins are easily above 50%.
Perhaps I should change my career now, putting away all my knowledge and education and start a food stall. Who knows, maybe one day I might just be driving a S500 myself too!!

1st week of Work in 2010
So fast, without me realizing its Friday today. Started work on the 4th Jan 2010 (Monday) after a long break since Christmas Eve.
The whole week was really a demanding week. Lots of work and things to catch up. One good thing is that some of my colleagues are from Australia and many are still on leave, so one headache less from there.
Anyhow, this is the new week for the year, hopefully things will go very very smoothly in work for everyone, have a wonderful and fruitful year ahead!!!

New Year Celebration
This year, I was off from work from the 24th of Dec 2009 onwards until today (4th Jan 2010).
Unlike all previous years, normally New Year's countdown was done at home, this year, I choose to do it differently. I arranged with one of my best friend (Sur) to have a year end dinner together.
He had suggested that we have the dinner at KLCC (an iconic location in Malaysia) as he had also plan to countdown to 2010 there with his wife after the dinner and also at the same time, the place is easily accessible with the monorail system.
Then, as we agreed the venue, he proceed to make reservations as we know, it might be packed for year end. Initially he booked a Japanese restaurant. However, after discussion, we change it for some American grills instead. However, for the grill, they do not take phone reservations, so we have to be there early to book for the place.
This time, I brought along my mom to join us for the dinner. My mom have some inconvenience in walking, hence, most of the time, she will prefer to stay at home. However, I told her that we have reserved the place for 5 person - Mr & Mrs Sur, me + my gf + my mom, so she agrees to go.
The traffic was smooth, not major traffic jams anywhere. We arrived there at approx 7.15pm and I found myself a nice parking spot too. We had really great time during the dinner and it was great to have the company of Mr & Mrs Sur together with us.
We were sitted at about 7.40pm, ordered our food and drinks and chatted all the way until the ladies ordered some desserts and me & Sur happily enjoying our beers.
We left the place at about 11pm and all the shops in the mall have been close. However, there was a large crowd outside the building near the KLCC park waiting for the countdown to 2010 and the fireworks display.
I send my gf home after the dinner and then drove back home with my mom. On the way, we did stop by my uncle's steamboat shop to pass some things to the shop only to know that my aunt was admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain.
Anyway, I know my mom was really happy and enjoyed the dinner as she was happily telling everyone of my relative that she went to KLCC for the very 1st time after hearing about it for so long.
Well, there is a Chinese saying - "... been through it one time, growing once.." of something of that notion. I know that after the passing of my dad, I have learn to care greater for those around me. I tend to appreciate those friends and families / relatives around me better.
To all of you out there, cherish the people around you and spend some quality time with them whenever possible.

We left the place at about 11pm and all the shops in the mall have been close. However, there was a large crowd outside the building near the KLCC park waiting for the countdown to 2010 and the fireworks display.
I send my gf home after the dinner and then drove back home with my mom. On the way, we did stop by my uncle's steamboat shop to pass some things to the shop only to know that my aunt was admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain.
Anyway, I know my mom was really happy and enjoyed the dinner as she was happily telling everyone of my relative that she went to KLCC for the very 1st time after hearing about it for so long.
Well, there is a Chinese saying - "... been through it one time, growing once.." of something of that notion. I know that after the passing of my dad, I have learn to care greater for those around me. I tend to appreciate those friends and families / relatives around me better.
To all of you out there, cherish the people around you and spend some quality time with them whenever possible.
